All in a day’s “work”

Yesterday, a student called to inform me my graduate reading and writing class was canceled for today.  I don’t know why it was canceled.  I don’t know if we have to make it up.  All I know is that I had a couple hours added to my day today.  The other surprise of the day was that we had electricity. Today was supposed to be a no power day (we have those regularly), so when the alarm went off I quickly hopped out of bed, started a pot of coffee and took a shower.  I rationalized that working out would be too risky…I wanted to have power long enough to dry and straighten my hair.  A girl’s got to have her priorities.

It turns out the power never went off.  Oh shucks, guess I could have worked out.  There’s always tomorrow…

With the unexpected break from teaching, I set off to some of the other pursuits that I equally enjoy. One being catching up with some students who became close friends last year.

The beginning of the year is always a bit hectic as connections get re-established, classes get started, and I try to find a routine. Things are beginning to settle now, which means I have more time to catch up with people.

And play Rage.  Everybody needs a little more Rage in their life.

These girls are quite fond of the game.

There were quite a few grins and giggles.

There was lots of laughter and teasing.

Some laughter about me.  Turns out my Chinese listening skills are now good enough to know when I’m being lovingly mocked.

Enough to understand when the girls think I’m distracted taking pictures and start discussing my awkward shuffling techniques.  And try to imitate said techniques.

So I taught myself how to shuffle in my bedroom when I was about seven years old.  At least it gets the job done.

After an afternoon of jovial competition, I set to work in the kitchen whipping up a feast for the other single girls on the team.  On the menu for the night?  Comfort food to the max.  Chicken and dumpling soup, fruit salad, and peach cobbler with whipped cream. Worth. Every. Minute. In. The. Kitchen.

Oh.  And in case you were wondering.  I may just be the world’s messiest cook.
